Prince Harry said he wants to repair his difficult relationship with King Charles and William, using a GQ interview to make a public appeal for reconciliation even as the family rift remains in view. He said the issue is one that many people will recognise and that he wants the family issues to work out.
The interview was released on the GQ website while the royal family was welcoming the Sultan of Oman to Windsor Castle for a state visit, giving Harry’s remarks an immediate public backdrop. That timing mattered: the discussion about his family landed not in private, but in the middle of another high-profile royal moment.
Harry told GQ in New York that his situation is, in his words, a massively relatable issue for so many people. He said there are sibling disagreements and broken relationships between children and parents, and that people he speaks to keep bringing it up. In his view, the fascination is partly rooted in the hope that if he and his family can work it out, it may help others work through their own problems too.
He also framed the rift as something he does not want to keep feeding. “For me, there’s enough drama in the world and enough drama in people’s lives than to continue with issues with family,” he said. He added that some people do not want reconciliation, but that he does, and that letting go of the past is what he would encourage everyone to do.
A spokesperson for the Sussexes later clarified that Harry’s comments were not intended as a swipe at Prince William or directed at any of the royal family in any way. That matters because the interview was widely read through the lens of a long-running family dispute, even though Harry was presenting himself as someone who wants the repair to happen rather than someone sharpening the conflict.
He also used the interview to talk about the life he and Meghan Markle have been building for Archie and Lilibet. Harry said returning for opportunities, and being able to put the children in British schools, meant a lot to him. He said the children had been in school for two weeks and were loving it, adding that it was giving them a completely different experience and that he was not criticising American schools.
Harry said it was so important for Archie and Lilibet to have two completely different cultural experiences. He also said he does not want sympathy because he is a prince, has a support network and has done different forms of therapy, and put in the work. The next step is still the one he left hanging: whether that work on his side will be met by King Charles and William with any move of their own.
