Maurizio Landini turned a packed Cgil demonstration in Rome into a new deadline for protest on Tuesday, announcing a general strike for 20 November as he wrapped up his speech from a stage in piazza del Popolo. The tail of the march was still in piazza della Repubblica when he told the crowd that the union would stop work again in two weeks.

Landini said more than 100,000 people were there and that it was time for the movement to take back its voice. The announcement gives the rally a concrete next step and turns the Rome mobilization into something more than a one-day show of force: it is now the opening move in a new strike call that lands in the middle of the budget season.

The demonstration was promoted together with the Via maestra, the network of more than 100 associations that has tied this mobilization to wages, work, public health, public school, the environment and the defense of the Constitution. The slogan on the march summed that up in four words: “Lavoro, pace, ambiente, welfare, Costituzione.”

That wider frame did not soften the language from the stage. Landini said the country needs answers that give young people a future and accused the government of offering “marchette elettorali” instead. Elly Schlein, who later embraced him after the speech, said the salary of Italians had been forgotten by Giorgia Meloni's government, while Giuseppe Conte spoke briefly with Landini nearby.

Nicola Fratoianni and Angelo Bonelli were also in the crowd, and Bonelli wore a Fiom helmet for the occasion. The image fit the day: political leaders and union figures moving inside the same rally, while the message from the stage stayed fixed on wages and work.

The strike date also lands on the same day as the European mobilization of students, which broadens the pressure around 20 November. For Cgil, that makes the next move clear: after the Rome demonstration, the union is not closing the campaign but escalating it, with the budget fight and the next strike now running on the same clock.
