At least three children and one adult died on Thursday in a shooting at Silver Rail school in Bend, Oregon, in a deadly burst of violence that brought police and the FBI to the campus within minutes. The suspect was killed.

The emergency call came in at 12:59 local time, after reports of an active shooter. By around 13:00, the violence had hit the primary school, and by around 13:02, the suspected attacker was dead from a gunshot wound, said Sheila Miller, who added that the teen may have been shot by a passerby.

That detail matters because the school day turned into a crime scene almost instantly. Parents of students were told to pick up their children at a nearby church, while officers and federal agents worked the grounds and tried to piece together how a school in Bend became the site of so much loss so quickly. Kash Patel said FBI members were at the scene and working with local law enforcement.

Steven Cook said the district was devastated and heartbroken by the tragedy, and he said its immediate priorities were the wellbeing of students and staff and cooperation with emergency crews. His message carried the scale of the moment: a school that should have been focused on classes was instead trying to account for children, adults and everyone caught in the violence.

There is still a sharp gap between what was seen and what has been formally named. Police had not officially announced the number of dead or released the names of the victims, the attacker or the passerby, even as investigators moved through the scene and families waited for answers. That leaves the central questions in place: why this school, why now, and who the teenage attacker was before the gunfire ended the attack.
