Boston-area restaurants marked National Taco Day on Tuesday, Oct. 7 with new taco launches, free giveaways and daylong specials that gave customers a reason to show up hungry. The deals ranged from a new chicken tinga taco at Anna's Taqueria to a free taco window at Margaritas Mexican Restaurant and Baja fish tacos at Joe's on Newbury and Joe's Waterfront.
The holiday landed on a Tuesday, which helped turn the day into a clean fit for Taco Tuesday promotions across Greater Boston. That made the timing matter: customers looking for a quick lunch or an after-work stop could find limited-time offers without leaving the local market.
Anna's Taqueria moved early, starting on Oct. 6 with a chicken tinga taco built on slow-simmered shredded chicken in a smoky tomato-chipotle-adobo sauce, topped with red onion, queso fresco and cilantro on warm corn tortillas. The taco sold for $4.55, and the same chicken tinga also showed up as a protein option in burritos and bowls. Anna's also swapped in a Mango Passion Fruit Agua Fresca for its summertime Watermelon Agua Fresca, with the new drink priced from $3.50 to $5.50.
Joe's on Newbury and Joe's Waterfront went a different route, serving Baja fish tacos with crispy cod, chipotle slaw, pico de gallo and sriracha aioli alongside rice and beans. Margaritas Mexican Restaurant gave rewards members a free taco from 3 to 5 p.m. on Oct. 7, with ground beef, chicken or carnitas served in hard or soft shells. Enrollment in its Circle of Friends rewards program was free through the restaurant's app and website, and the giveaway sat inside the chain's annual TacOctoberfest celebration, which also included $4 Taco Tuesday specials throughout the day, Taco Gigante challenges and seasonal food-and-drink pairings.
That is where the day’s easy pitch gets a little more complicated. National Taco Day is presented as a one-day event, but not every promotion waited for Oct. 7, and not every offer belonged only to the holiday. Anna's Taqueria started a day early, while Margaritas wrapped its free-taco window into a broader TacOctoberfest push rather than treating the holiday as the whole story.
Anna's also added a contest that pushed beyond the date on the calendar: starting on National Taco Day, customers could submit ideas for a future taco special, and the winning suggestion would earn free tacos for a year. For diners in Greater Boston, that leaves the clearest next step in the same place as the holiday itself — the local menu board — even as the restaurants keep stretching the promotion beyond a single Tuesday.
