Magic: The Gathering is adding God Packs to its boosters starting with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm in 2027, a change that also renames Play Boosters and reshapes what comes out of Booster Packs and Collector Boosters. The company said the update is meant to make opening packs feel bigger without raising MSRP.

The timing is why fans are looking now: Nauctis: The Sunken Realm is the first Magic set of 2027, and it will be the first to carry the new booster rules. From that point on, every Magic Multiverse set will have a chance at a God Pack, and the next confirmed step is the set’s release in 2027.

A God Pack is simple in concept and extreme in practice. Every nonbasic card in the pack is rare or mythic rare, and starting with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, 1 in every 1,000 Booster Packs will contain 14 rare or mythic rare cards. In Collector Boosters, the version turns up more often, with 1 in every 300 carrying the God Pack treatment. Magic: The Gathering said the first person to open one would briefly lose their mind, and it said it is fully supportive of that reaction.

The changes are not just about adding splashy openings. Booster Packs will also get more foil rare and mythic rare cards, and Japan Showcase cards will be crackable in the wildcard slot in traditional foil. But the company is also pulling back on lower-rarity shine: foil common and uncommon cards are going away, and a foil card is no longer guaranteed in every Booster Pack. If a pack does include a foil card, it will now be rare or mythic rare, which makes the new premium openings feel more likely to deliver value even as some of the old filler disappears.

That creates the trade-off inside the update. Magic: The Gathering is promising more rare cards and more dramatic hits while taking away some of the quieter extras that used to pad out the pack. The company says the point is excitement, not a higher price tag, but the new structure makes the rarest pulls matter more and leaves less room for routine foil cards to soften a dud opening.

For now, the key date is fixed: 2027, beginning with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm. After that, the unanswered question is which Magic Multiverse sets will become the next ones to carry God Packs, while Universes Beyond sets are expected in 2028.
