The Giants brought back Jihad Ward on September 30, 2026, signing him off the Vikings' practice squad after Brian Burns suffered an ACL tear. The move gives the Giants a familiar veteran edge option at the exact moment their pass rush lost a starter.
That is why Ward is back in the search, and why the Giants are moving quickly around him. He spent 2022-23 with the Giants, started 20 games in that stretch and is coming off a 12-game season with the Titans under Dennard Wilson. He also did not play in Minnesota this season before the Giants pulled him off the practice squad.
Ward's return matters because the injury to Burns does more than remove one player. It opens snaps, and it forces the Giants to decide how much of that work goes to Kayvon Thibodeaux and Abdul Carter at outside linebacker, how much stays with Chauncey Golston and Ward, and how much can spill to Arvell Reese. Reese had been tucked at inside linebacker because of the edge depth at the start of the season, but Burns' injury was expected to create more rush opportunities for him.
Reese has shown enough through three games to make that discussion real. He has logged 139 snaps as an off-ball linebacker and has two tackles for loss and one quarterback hit. That production gives the Giants a reason to keep him involved, but it does not guarantee a full-time move to a larger pass-rush role.
That is where Ward changes the math. He gives the Giants an inside-outside option at outside linebacker or EDGE, which means the team does not have to hand every extra rush rep to Reese just because Burns is gone. Ward also brings a career body of work that fits the job: 49 career starts and 24 career sacks.
The shape of the rotation is now the real story. John Harbaugh said on Wednesday that Burns' injury would likely create more rush opportunities for Reese, and the Giants clearly agree enough to add Ward the same day the edge room thinned out. But bringing in a veteran with Ward's experience also suggests the Giants want insurance, not a gamble on a single young player to absorb the loss.
So the next question is not whether Reese will be used more. It is how much more, with Ward in the room and Thibodeaux, Carter and Golston already in the mix. The Giants needed a fix for Burns' injury right away, and on September 30 they answered with Ward. What they do with the extra snaps now will tell you whether Reese is getting a bigger role or just a little more room to breathe.
