Jamaal Williams has put his name back in the mix in Detroit. Last weekend, he reached out to Dan Campbell about a possible return to the Detroit Lions, and Campbell made clear the door is not shut — but the team does not need him right now.
That matters because Williams has been out of football since the end of the 2024 season and says he has been staying in shape for a comeback. He is not just another former player checking in, either. Williams was one of the most popular Lions during his two-year stint from 2021 to 2022, and he rushed for 17 touchdowns in 2022, a franchise high at the time.
The run he had in Detroit explains why this call landed with weight. Williams wanted to stay, but left after a free agency contract dispute, then spent two unsuccessful years with the New Orleans Saints before his career paused. Now he is trying to turn that pause into a next step, and he told Campbell exactly where his head had been when he left: “I didn’t want to go nowhere. I wanted to be there,” and “That’s where I wanted to be, but at the same time it’s just like, ‘We just got done having this crazy season, what am I doing that you don’t think I deserve?’”
The friction is simple. Williams is ready, but the Lions are not short on reasons to wait. Campbell said the club is holding tight at running back for now and would keep Williams in mind if things change, while also saying his services are not needed at this time. The Lions have given Jahmyr Gibbs a larger workload, used Sione Vaki more, and they are managing the position with the players they already have rather than moving quickly on a reunion.
So the next step is not a signing, at least not yet. Williams has opened the line of communication, and Campbell has left it open in return. If the Lions’ situation changes, the path is there. Until then, Williams is left where comebacks often begin: in shape, on call, and waiting for a team to decide the timing has finally lined up.
