Jornada 16 of the Apertura 2026 began with Liga MX still undecided at the top, as América, Cruz Azul and Chivas all arrived on 29 points. América was listed first on goals scored, but that edge was thin enough to make the lead feel temporary before the round had even settled.

That is why the General Table Liga Mx is drawing so much attention now: with only 15 full matchdays completed, the championship had reached the point where the top could shift more than once in a single day. For the first time in this stretch, three of the four big clubs were fighting for first place while the final four Liguilla spots were still open, and that meant every result carried immediate weight.

Atlas was close enough to keep the pressure on. Hernán Crespo’s side sat fourth with 27 points, two behind the leaders, and still had a mathematical path to first place. The margins were so tight that a change at the top depended not only on points, but on goals scored, which kept América ahead of Cruz Azul and Chivas despite the three-way tie. Four places remained available for the Liguilla, and Santos, Toluca, Tijuana and León were occupying them before the round was finished.

Behind that group, Monterrey, Pumas, Querétaro and Pachuca were still in the chase, which turned the last two dates into a sorting exercise as much as a title race. Necaxa had already beaten Tijuana, leaving Tijuana on the road loss and with everything to play for in Jornada 17. Santos then beat Atlante at Estadio Banorte and moved momentarily into fifth place, a reminder that the table could still be rewritten before the final whistle of the weekend.

The next swing comes with América at Pumas, Cruz Azul at Tigres and Chivas at León, all before Jornada 17 closes the regular season. With one round left after this, the only certainty is that the table will not stay still for long.
