Court documents have revealed that 2K does not intend to create a system to carry VC from one NBA 2K game to the next. The company says each release should feel like a fresh start, and that players should meet the new game on equal footing rather than bring over currency from the prior year.
That explanation landed now because NBA 2K keeps arriving in yearly installments, and players keep asking the same thing when the next one appears: can the currency move with them? Stephen Totilo of Game File drew attention to the legal arguments from 2K representatives, putting the policy back in front of players who have long treated VC as something they should be able to keep when the season changes.
The filing goes further than a simple no. 2K says transferring VC would require a technical solution and the additional resources that come with it. It also says the company would have to separate VC earned in the game from VC bought with real money, a distinction that matters because the two kinds of currency are not the same even if they sit in the same balance on screen. That is part of why 2K says it sees no benefit for players in doing the transfer at all.
At the same time, the company’s own systems appear to give it a detailed view of how players use the game. Developers can track game sessions, VC balance, purchases and expenses by day. That makes the refusal harder to brush off as a technical impossibility. The documents suggest 2K can see enough to map spending closely, but still chooses not to build the bridge that would move currency into the next release.
That gap is the point. Players may keep asking for the same feature each year, but 2K’s position is not that it cannot track the money or the balance. It is that it does not intend to spend the time and resources to make VC transferable, even while the game cycle resets again and again. The parent company Take-Two is tied to GTA VI, while 2K remains the publisher behind NBA 2K, and the latest court filing leaves the same conclusion standing: the currency stays behind when the new game arrives.
For players waiting on the next release, the answer is now plain. Unless 2K changes course, VC will continue to be treated as something tied to the year it was earned or bought, not a balance that follows a player into the next NBA 2K installment.
