It is a notable turn because Glenn did not arrive in the job by accident. He spent his post-playing career working toward becoming the head coach of the Jets, the team that drafted him and where he made his name as a top cornerback. That history matters now because the job he once chased came with a choice in how much control to keep, and in his first season he chose to hand off the defensive play-calling.
That first-year setup included Steve Wilks as defensive coordinator, with Glenn stepping back from calling the defense himself. The results were hard to miss. The Jets finished 3-14, ranked 31st in points allowed and 29th in total yards allowed. For a coach known for defense, that kind of season made the division of labor look less like a safeguard and more like a problem that needed fixing.
The friction is in the simplest question: what changes when the head coach starts making the calls again? Glenn's return to game-day play-calling does not guarantee anything by itself. A defense can still fail for reasons that go beyond the person with the sheet in hand, and the Jets' last season showed how little protection comes from a title alone. But the move does tell you where Glenn thinks the answer begins, and he is choosing to put himself back at the center of it.
That is why the shift matters now. Glenn is not rediscovering a new idea so much as reclaiming an old one, one that was part of the path that got him the Jets job in the first place.
