Bobb'e J. Thompson was sentenced to 30 months in prison in Sioux City after pleading guilty in April to possessing a stolen firearm. U.S. District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand also ordered three years of supervised release, and Thompson, 30, will stay in U.S. Marshals custody until he is moved to a federal prison.
The sentence was announced on September 16 by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Iowa, putting a federal prison term on a case that began with a traffic stop and ended with a loaded gun. Thompson was driving a vehicle in Cerro Gordo County on September 22, 2025, when law enforcement observed it going 104 mph in a 70-mph zone and pulled it over.
What officers saw next widened the case beyond a speeding violation. As one officer got out of the vehicle, Thompson and the passenger switched seats. There was also the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. During the search, officers found a backpack belonging to Thompson with multiple bags of dispensary-bought marijuana and a.40 caliber handgun that was fully loaded with a 15-round magazine and a round in the chamber. The firearm had been reported stolen from a vehicle in Kansas City, Missouri.
That combination mattered because Thompson had already been convicted in 2020 of battery causing serious bodily injury and assault with force that may have resulted in great bodily injury, and in 2022 of prohibited possession of a firearm. He also has a public profile that includes appearances on That's So Raven and 30 Rock, and a recent role in The Funny Thing About Love.
There is no parole in the federal system, so the 30-month sentence is the prison time Thompson must serve before supervised release begins. The question now is not whether he will return to court, but when he reaches the federal prison where that sentence will continue.
