Paramount has released the trailer for Mr. Irrelevant, a sports biopic built around the John Tuggle story. David Corenswet plays Tuggle, the final pick in the 1983 NFL draft, whose rise with the New York Giants is now headed for theaters on Dec. 25.
The title fits the history. In football, the last selection in the draft is known as Mr. Irrelevant, and Tuggle was that pick in 1983. The film follows what happened after the New York Giants took him: he made the roster, played on special teams, and later moved into starting fullback after Rob Carpenter was injured. His teammates voted him special teams player of the year, a detail that gives the story its pull far beyond the nickname.
The trailer also makes clear why the John Tuggle story has lasted. During the offseason, he underwent minor surgery for a knee injury, was involved in a car crash, then went to see a doctor for shoulder pain and was diagnosed with cancer. That diagnosis changed the shape of his life, but it did not erase what came before it. The film also casts Isabel May as Katie, Michael Shannon as Giants head coach Bill Parcells, and David Krumholtz as Julius “Whitey” Horai, with Nick Santora writing and Jonathan Levine directing. Gillian Bohrer, Santora and Levine are among the producers.
There is also a sharp edge to the story that the trailer has to carry. After the 1985 season, the Giants did not keep Tuggle on the team, even after everything he had given them. Yet the organization kept paying for his health insurance until his death in 1986, and the Giants later wore his number 38 on their helmets during the 1986-87 season, the season that ended in a Super Bowl win. That is the part that turns a football biography into something harder: a team moving on, then honoring him anyway.
Mr. Irrelevant: The John Tuggle Story is not just revisiting a draft quirk. It is reopening the record of a player whose career, illness and loss became part of Giants history, and the new trailer puts that story back in front of an audience before the film arrives on Dec. 25.
