Taylor Swift skipped the 78th Emmy Awards in Los Angeles on Sept. 14 and was instead seen at Arrowhead Stadium, where she watched the Kansas City Chiefs' home opener against the Denver Broncos. In a suite, Swift was spotted talking to Tom Cruise while she supported Travis Kelce.

The timing gave the appearance extra weight. Swift's concert special, "Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour | The Final Show," had entered the season with five nominations at the Creative Arts Emmys, making her absence from television's biggest night hard to miss.

Those nominations were tied to the Disney+ production that captured the last performance of her record-shattering Eras Tour at BC Place in Vancouver, British Columbia, on Dec. 8, 2024. Swift was personally recognized as both a producer and performer in the outstanding variety special (pre-recorded) category, while the special also competed for awards in craft categories.

But the awards story had already been settled before the main ceremony. All five categories involving the production were handed out at the Creative Arts Emmys on Sept. 5, and Swift took no trophies home that night. "The Muppet Show" won outstanding variety special (pre-recorded), while "The Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime Show Starring Bad Bunny" swept several technical honors.

The choice also fit a broader pattern in Swift's calendar. She was at Arrowhead Stadium on the same day Travis Kelce played his first game as a married man against the Denver Broncos in Week 1 of Monday Night Football. Swift and Kelce tied the knot during the NFL offseason on July 3 at Madison Square Garden, and she showed up for the opener instead of the red carpet.

Swift already has an Emmy at home, from a 2015 win for outstanding creative achievement in interactive media, original interactive program for "AMEX Unstaged: Taylor Swift Experience." This time, the unanswered question is simpler: when Swift had to choose between the Emmys and the Chiefs, football won the night.
