Vancouver Vs Montreal: Whitecaps chase second overall on Decision Day

Vancouver Whitecaps FC go to Stade Saputo on Saturday with one more seeding task left before the MLS Cup Playoffs. Brian White is part of the reason the trip matters: he scored twice in last Sunday’s 5-1 win over Seattle Sounders FC, reached 100 goals for the club and helped push Vancouver into a position few teams ever get to hold this late in the season.

Kickoff against CF Montréal is set for 2 p.m. PCT, with the match live on Apple TV and available on CKNW.com and 101.1 HD3. Vancouver enters at 18W-8L-7D with 61 points, already locked into first place in the Western Conference and home-field advantage throughout the western side of the 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs. But the Whitecaps are still chasing a higher finish in the league table, and a win or draw in Montreal would secure second overall in the MLS standings.

That is why this final regular-season match has a different feel from a typical Decision Day trip. Vancouver does not need the result for its western crown, but it still needs the result to protect the best possible path it can get before the playoff bracket is set. The Whitecaps have turned the home stretch into a record book: 11 home wins, 35 home points, 72 goals and a plus-38 goal differential, all club bests in an MLS regular season. They also became the first team to sweep all of their Cascadia Cup matches, and White’s two-goal performance earned him MLS Player of the Matchday for Matchday 34.

There is also a sharp edge to the matchup. Vancouver beat CF Montréal 2-0 at BC Place last season in MLS play, and it has six wins and two draws in its last eight matches against Montréal and Toronto FC. Still, the Whitecaps are carrying a second storyline into Saturday: they are trying to bounce back from their TELUS Canadian Championship defeat in September while keeping the same standard they showed against Seattle. After Saturday, MLS pauses for the November FIFA international window, and Round One of the playoffs is scheduled to begin at BC Place on Sunday, November 22, so what happens in Montreal now will help define the opening round that follows.
