Megan Stalter turned the Emmys red carpet into a living trophy on Monday night, arriving spray-painted head-to-toe in gold and dressed like a life-size Emmy Award. She wore golden wings and held up a sphere that echoed the award itself, while Paul W. Downs joined her for the stunt.
The appearance marked the first time Stalter had attended the Emmys as a nominee, giving the spectacle a sharper edge than a simple fashion moment. She earned her first career nod for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for playing Kayla Schaeffer in the fifth and final season of Hacks, the role that helped define this stretch of her career.
Stalter has treated red carpets as part performance, part punch line, and part wish fulfilled. In April, she told Marie Claire that every appearance in front of people was a chance to have fun and make the most of it because it was her dream. That instinct has shown up before, including when she and Downs appeared at the Critics Choice Awards in matching orange looks inspired by Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner’s coordinating outfits at the Marty Supreme premiere.
That earlier bit was not improvised on the spot. Hacks producer Genevieve Aniello suggested the pair re-create the looks, and Downs said he first thought pulling it off sounded impossible before Stalter cut through the doubt with a simple, steady promise: “We’re going to get it done.”
The Emmys look lands differently because it arrives as Stalter is saying goodbye to the part that brought her to this point. She made her Broadway debut this summer in Cole Escola’s Oh, Mary!, but the awards-show sheen still circles back to Kayla Schaeffer and the series that made the nomination possible. The celebration is real, yet it sits beside a farewell.
Downs has already described what followed when he broke the nomination news in July: Stalter thought he was joking, then started shaking once she believed him. The only thing left to learn from Monday night is whether the first-time nominee turned the stunt into an Emmy Award win, or whether the gold look was the prize she brought home from the carpet itself.
