Derek Phillips died days after suffering sudden cardiac arrest during the first football game of the season, the loss now settling over the University of Iowa Hawkeye Marching Band and the School of Music horn studio.
His family said the collapse happened in the heat of the day, when temperatures were in the 90s and heat indices reached around 105 degrees. Phillips was later treated at the University of Iowa Hospital, where, the family said, the ICU team made extraordinary efforts before they reached the heartbreaking decision to remove life support.
Phillips was not a name on a roster so much as a presence inside the band. He was the marching band's mellophone section leader and, his family said, someone who brought light, humor and kindness into every room. They said he played jazz, sang his heart out and marched under the lights, and that music was the language of his soul. The band echoed that grief in announcing his death on Facebook, calling the loss one of the most difficult tragedies it has ever experienced and saying he represented the very best of what it means to be a Hawkeye.
The response on the field was immediate. The band said its athletic trainer, police officers, university medical personnel, EMS and students moved quickly to help Phillips before he was taken to the hospital. That rapid response did not change the outcome, and the family said the damage to his brain was too severe despite those efforts.
The chronology is clear even where some details are not. Phillips collapsed during the game, was hospitalized afterward, and died days later after life support was withdrawn.
