Prince Harry is set to return to public view in the United Kingdom, with two Invictus Games events late next week and a confirmed appearance at the WellChild Awards on Sept. 21. It will be his first run of public engagements since he moved back to the United Kingdom with Meghan and their two children in late August.
The WellChild Awards in London, where Harry is scheduled to speak, has long been one of the places where he has appeared in a more personal capacity. He and Meghan have both attended the event multiple times before, and this year’s appearance puts him back in front of the same kind of audience he has often supported since stepping away from senior royal duties.
Harry founded the Invictus Games more than a decade ago, and the events he is due to attend next week are part of that work. After the London appearance, he is scheduled to take part in the Clinton Global Initiative annual meeting in New York on Sept. 22-23, giving him a stretch of public-facing engagements across two countries in a matter of days.
The timing matters because it lands just after a Sept. 8 letter from the head of the Royal Household said Harry and Meghan will remain private citizens and will not be working royals while living in the United Kingdom. That message has not been expanded on by Buckingham Palace, even as Harry’s calendar fills with appearances that are public, deliberate and closely watched.
There are still basic details the family has not made public. It is not known where the Sussexes are living in the United Kingdom, and it is not known where Archie and Lilibet are enrolled in school. What is clear is that the family plans to stay for an extended period, and that Harry’s next few days will be measured less by court ceremony than by the kinds of engagements he has chosen to keep doing.
That makes his return notable for what it shows and for what it does not. Harry is back in the United Kingdom, back on the public schedule and back to the work he has built outside the formal royal structure. The unanswered question is not whether he will appear next week. It is how visible that life will be while the family keeps the rest of it private.
