Bo Nix is back where he has been waiting to be, and the wait is almost over. The Broncos open the season Monday night against the Chiefs in Kansas City, and Nix is set to return to regular-season action after 240 days away from game play.
He put the feeling plainly: he has been pacing through what felt like a long practice schedule, and he said he “can’t wait.” That is the mood around a quarterback who knows the stage in front of him, and knows it well enough to welcome it. Nix is 6-1 in prime-time games, a mark tied for the best win percentage for any quarterback with at least five starts since 2000, and the opener gives him another one under the lights.
That is why his words matter now. The Broncos are not easing into the year with a quiet start or a soft matchup. They are opening against a division rival on Monday night, and Nix is doing it after an injury in the Divisional Round against the Bills kept him out of game action for months. He did not spell out every detail of that setback, and the club has not said anything that would turn this into a full medical report. What is clear is simpler: he is back, and he sounds impatient to play.
Courtland Sutton, who has spent the last two seasons alongside Nix as a team captain, said the quarterback looks ready from the way he carries himself. Sutton pointed to the connection they have built, including the pass he caught for Nix’s first career touchdown in 2024, and said Nix is acting like a competitor who wants out there now. That chemistry has also shown up in the numbers: Sutton has caught 164 passes for more than 2,000 yards from Nix across the regular season and playoffs.
Pat Surtain II echoed that view, saying Nix’s mindset is to show the world what he is about and that his poise and leadership shape what the Broncos do as a team. Still, there is a reason the opener carries a little extra weight. Being ready in practice is not the same as being fully tested in a live game, and Monday night will be the first real answer to how much rust, if any, remains after the layoff.
The game also lands in a season that already has extra attention attached to it. When the Broncos kick off their season on Sept. 14, Peyton Manning and Eli will be on the call for the ManningCast broadcast, another reminder that this is not being treated like an ordinary opener. The Broncos have listed just one player on their initial practice report of the 2026 season, a sign that the team is trying to keep the early part of the year as clean as possible.
For Nix, though, the point is not the backdrop. It is the whistle. He said he is excited to get back out there, excited to play another team, and excited to do it with the group around him. Monday night will show whether that long stretch of pacing ends with the kind of start the Broncos have been waiting for.
