Who Won Sunday Night Football? Cairo Santos Delivers for the Bears

Cairo Santos answered the biggest moment of the night with the biggest kick. With 1:39 left in the fourth quarter and the Bears leading the Patriots 27-21, he drilled a 58-yard field goal that helped put the game away on Thursday night.

The search around who won Sunday Night Football came down to that swing of a leg because the Bears needed one clean finish in a tight game. Santos said, “I told HT, ‘I want it,’” after Richard Hightower relayed Ben Johnson’s question about whether he wanted the kick. Johnson was weighing a punt from the New England 40-yard line against the field goal and initially went with the punt until a Patriots injury timeout gave him more time to think it through.

The kick carried more than distance. It was made from the third-longest field goal in Soldier Field history, and it came after Santos had missed a 53-yard try off the inside of the right upright seven minutes earlier. That miss would have made a shorter attempt or a punt feel safer. Instead, Johnson sent Santos back out for a longer one, a choice that could have handed the Patriots the ball back with about 90 seconds left around midfield if it failed.

Santos did not hide how much the sequence meant. He said he was “thankful that Ben trusts me on that” and added that he “delivered a great kick right down the middle.” Afterward, he called it a “tough week” against a “tough opponent” and said he had been “super frustrated,” then added that he was glad he made it and “put the game away.”

The trust mattered as much as the make. Johnson later called the decision “close,” and Santos said he wanted to help the Bears win a primetime game on a short week and improve to 5-2. Tory Taylor and Joe Thuney swarmed him after the kick, and Caleb Williams summed up the feeling with a simple line: “That’s my guy, Cairo,” while saying the Bears trust Santos and that he has their back.

For one night, the miss earlier in the quarter did not define him. The late kick did. That is the part that will last: not just that Santos won it, but that Johnson trusted him to win it after he had already come up short once.
