Lucien Smith, a once-ubiquitous figure in the downtown art world, has died at 37. Bill Powers, his longtime friend and gallerist, confirmed the death and said, “Lucien lives in a wordless place inside us now.”
No cause of death was given. That absence is now part of the news, because Smith was not a remote name in the background of the scene but a visible, often-discussed artist whose work and persona helped define a stretch of the past 15 years. ARTnews reported the death.
Smith worked primarily in painting and sculpture, and he moved easily across other lanes too, dabbling in NFTs, film and restaurants. He studied at Cooper Union, and his early rise came fast enough that the art world was still mapping what he might become when his name started circulating beyond the studio crowd.
That climb began to harden into something like lore in 2011, when Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn bought a painting from his senior-thesis show at Cooper Union. Powers later hosted his first solo gallery show, “Good Vibrations,” at Half Gallery in 2012, and the work that followed gave him a market life that was hard to ignore. His “Rain Paintings” sold in the low five figures at first and later reached as high as $389,000 on the secondary auction market.
Smith also became, for a time, an inescapable presence on the downtown social scene of the past 15 years. In 2013, Alberto Mugrabi said he would be watching him because he “brings me sunshine in the rain.” By 2014, Smith had bought a house in Montauk and was spending much of his time there. He returned with another show at Half Gallery in 2015.
But the most striking fact in the account is the one left out: there is still no stated cause of death. For a figure remembered as a comeback-minded artist with momentum, that silence gives the announcement its edge. What remains now is not a neat postscript but a plain, unresolved fact — Smith is gone, and the reason has not been made public.
