Trump was on Marine One when the slide became visible, with the helicopter rolling to a stop near the presidential aircraft as the inflatable chute extended from the plane. He told reporters on the tarmac that they were checking it before and wanted to make sure, a line that made clear the deployment was not treated as an alarm but as a test.
The detail mattered because the slide appeared on the plane Trump typically boards through a different door, and the sight of it prompted immediate questions from people watching the departure. The White House print pool reported that the older white-and-blue Air Force One also moved out of its hangar and into position a few hundred yards behind the newer aircraft, deploying its front and rear stairs at the same time.
The aircraft scene added to the confusion. As of 2:19 p.m., the door of Marine One remained closed, even as the slide stayed visible from the Qatari-gifted Boeing 747. Trump later emerged from the helicopter and said the equipment had been tested to ensure it was working properly, reinforcing his explanation that the deployment was a safety check rather than an emergency.
What remained unresolved was whether that check changed the plane he would use next. It was not immediately clear whether the safety inspection would affect which aircraft Trump would take for his next flight, but the sequence on Wednesday suggested the slide drew attention precisely because it happened in public, on a presidential aircraft, and just before a trip to the Republican National Midterm Convention.
