Kaya Scodelario’s The Gentleman came back to Netflix with a smaller opening than its first run. Season 2 debuted on September 3 and drew 6.7 million views in its first four days, a start that put the series at No. 3 on Netflix’s English TV list for August 31 to September 6.

The numbers matter because this is the first fresh measure of how the series is landing after its return, and the gap is hard to ignore. Season 2’s opening was down nearly 50% from Season 1’s premiere viewership, even though the show has already been renewed for a third season. That means Netflix is not treating the lower debut as a reason to slow down the franchise, at least not yet.

The week’s English TV list put Death of a Pastor’s Wife in front with 13.9 million views, while Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black held No. 2 with 8 million. Outer Banks followed at No. 4 with 3.3 million views, and Netflix’s new Instadocs: The Decoy Plane documentary landed at No. 6 with 2.9 million views. Against that field, The Gentleman stayed near the top, but it did so with an audience that was clearly smaller than the one that greeted Season 1.

What the release does not explain is why the audience softened. The four-day total shows there is still interest, and the renewal for Season 3 suggests Netflix sees enough value to keep going. But the comparison with Season 1 leaves one obvious question hanging over the show: whether the series can hold that audience long enough for the next season to close the gap.
