Fraser Minton signed a seven-year, $50.4 million contract extension with the Boston Bruins on Tuesday, a move that secures the 22-year-old forward through future seasons at an average annual value of $7.2 million. The contract begins next season, giving Boston cost certainty while Minten moves past the possibility of becoming a restricted free agent after this season.
The timing is what gives the deal its weight. Minten just finished an 82-game season with career highs of 17 goals, 18 assists and 35 points, and the Bruins now have him under contract before those numbers can push his price higher. His 35 points were the most by a Bruins rookie since Danton Heinen and Jake DeBrusk in 2017-18, and he also led rookies with a plus-21 rating.
Minten’s season was not built on scoring alone. He ranked second on the Bruins in plus-minus, finished fifth among Boston skaters with 142 hits and 27 takeaways, and was named the NHL Rookie of the Month for January after leading first-year players with eight goals and tying for the lead with 14 points. That blend of production and pace helps explain why the Bruins chose to move early instead of letting the contract edge closer to the open market.
Don Sweeney called the signing a long-term extension and said Minten has kept growing since joining the organization, earning more trust from teammates and coaches along the way. He also pointed to Minten’s hockey sense, competitiveness, responsible two-way play and offensive growth as reasons Boston sees him as a valuable part of the group. The seven-year term is long, but it also matches the club’s logic: it buys out the seasons when a young player with a rising resume is most likely to become more expensive.
Minten’s path to this point runs back to the Toronto Maple Leafs, who selected him in the second round with the No. 38 pick of the 2022 NHL Draft. He later landed with the Boston Bruins in the March 7, 2025 deal that sent Brandon Carlo to Toronto, and the new contract now turns that trade-era acquisition into a much firmer part of Boston’s future. What the Bruins expect him to become over the full term is still the open question, but they have already answered the bigger one: they want the next chapter to be written in Boston.
