Bruce Campbell said his cancer carries a five-year prognosis, giving a stark new update on the diagnosis he first disclosed last March. In a candid interview on The Adam Carolla Show podcast, Campbell said the outlook applies to the type of cancer he has, though he did not want to name it.
The timing matters because Campbell is still working. The 68-year-old is on an 18-date tour into November for Ernie & Emma, the film he wrote, directed and stars in, and he said he is able to keep going because treatment is working.
When he first announced the diagnosis last March, Campbell said the cancer was treatable but not curable. He also said then that he was not looking for sympathy or advice and wanted to get ahead of false information before it spread. That same message still runs through his latest remarks: he said a five-year prognosis is accurate, “give or take,” and that he expects to be around for a while.
Campbell drew a line between living with the illness and surrendering to it. “I’ve decided pretty specifically, though, to live with it, not die from it,” he said, adding that he refuses to go down the cancer rabbit hole with people who share the same diagnosis. He also said the disease can be mentally draining because it affects more than one part of the body at a time, describing treatment as something that can keep shifting the burden from one problem to the next.
The practical question now is not whether Campbell is still active; it is how long he can keep balancing treatment and a demanding schedule. He said he is in the middle of treatment, responding to treatment and able to tour, but he has not disclosed the type of cancer or offered any more detail beyond that five-year outlook.
