Michigan football has adjusted its 2027 Michigan schedule, moving the season opener against Buffalo to Aug. 28 and pushing the game at Texas to Sept. 4. The Wolverines also are set to finish their nonconference slate Sept. 11 against Eastern Michigan in Ann Arbor.
The change matters now because the Football Bowl Subdivision will open before Labor Day weekend in 2027, after the elimination of Week 0 forced schedules to start earlier. That shift ripples through the calendar, and for Michigan it pulls a marquee road game into the first full week of the season while the opener lands in late August.
Tony Garcia reported that the Texas game would remain on as scheduled after an earlier concern that Michigan’s game against Eastern Michigan had been moved into Texas’s old date. A team spokesman said that would not happen, and the Longhorns trip stays intact as the back half of a home-and-home.
The dates also sharpen the stakes for a series that has already turned heavily in Texas’ favor. Texas beat Michigan 31-12 in Ann Arbor in Week 2 in 2024, then won 41-27 in the Citrus Bowl in Orlando on Dec. 31, 2025, a game coached by interim Biff Poggi after Kyle Whittingham was named Michigan’s new coach less than one week before kickoff.
What Michigan still does not know is when its two bye weeks will fall. The schedule now has three clear nonconference markers — Buffalo, Texas and Eastern Michigan — but the open dates remain unresolved, leaving the rest of the 2027 Michigan schedule unfinished even after the first two games were pushed up.
