Princewill Umanmielen came over from Ole Miss for his fifth season after finishing third in the SEC with 9.0 sacks and eighth with 13.0 tackles for loss, the sort of production LSU needed immediately if the defense was going to resemble the hype around it.
The offense carried the same kind of uncertainty, even with some loud names attached to it. Jayce Brown was one of 10 wide receivers LSU added in the transfer portal after a 2025 season in which he was third-team All-Big12 with 41 receptions for 712 yards and 5 touchdowns. Tre’ Brown arrived from Old Dominion after three seasons in community college and a line that included 13 starts, 38 receptions, 762 yards and 4 touchdowns. Eugene Wilson III came from Florida after three years there. Jackson Harris arrived from Hawaii after leading the Mountain West in yards per reception with 19.65 in 2025 and scoring 12 touchdowns.
The secondary and linebacker group showed the same blend of proven production and unfinished business. Ty Benefield transferred from Boise St. after playing in 41 games at safety through his first 3 seasons with the Broncos. TJ Dottery, a fifth-year senior from Ole Miss, led the SEC in tackles in 2025. Winston Watkins Jr was another Ole Miss transfer, while DJ Pickett, who played in all 13 games as a true freshman after arriving as a 5-star cornerback, moved into a full-time starter role opposite PJ Woodland.
That is the part that makes the roster feel both deep and fragile at the same time. LSU can point to the names, the awards and the production lines, but more than 60 new players and only around 34% of returning snaps means the first real test is not whether the Tigers have talent. It is how fast that talent fits together once the ball is kicked.
There is still star power here. Trey’Dez Green earned the number 7 as the offensive playmaker and was being set up for a massive season that could make him a first-round draft pick in the 2027 NFL Draft. Whit Weeks remained the heart and soul of the defense. But the opener against Clemson was going to answer the harder question first: whether LSU’s new pieces could look like a team before they had much time to become one.
