Lugard Edokpayi went from looking like a possible part of Michigan's edge rotation to a player whose chances now seem slim. After drawing notice in spring ball and early fall camp, his name has faded, and he may barely see the field on Saturday night against Western Michigan unless the game turns into a blowout.
That shift matters because Michigan does not release a depth chart, which leaves fans and media waiting until the opener to see how the Michigan football roster actually fits together. This is the first chance to find out whether Edokpayi still has a real path into the rotation after earlier signs pointed the other way.
Early in camp, Edokpayi had appeared to enter the two-deep at edge, a step that suggested he could be part of the weekend plan. Instead, John Henry Daley, Dominic Nichols and Cameron Brandt were named the starting edge rushers, while Nate Marshall, Benny Patterson, Carter Meadows and Tariq Boney were listed as possibilities to play this weekend. In that structure, there is simply less room for Edokpayi unless the game gets out of hand.
The same kind of uncertainty reaches tight end, where Zack Marshall is expected to get the starting nod and Kyle Whittingham has said the group will rotate this season based on personnel groupings and the hot hand. Hogan Hansen was Michigan's best pass-catching tight end in 2024, Mason Bonner is a freshman in the room, and Deakon Tonielli may not see the time originally expected unless Michigan uses four or five tight ends. That is the pressure point for Saturday: a roster that looks deeper on paper but may only reveal its real hierarchy once the game starts.
For Edokpayi, the story is not just that he slipped. It is that he slipped late, after briefly looking like a player who had climbed into position to matter. Saturday night should tell whether that drop was temporary camp noise or the first clear sign that his role has already narrowed before the season even begins.
