Felipe Lima has made the move he kept putting off: he is staying in peso-pena for good. The UFC fighter said the cut to 61 kg left him feeling very weak, and that the lighter weight class was taking too much out of his body.
He is set to return at UFC Paris on Saturday, July 5, when he faces Morgan Charriere. That is why his name is being searched now: the bout comes with a permanent division change attached, and it gives a clearer look at how he intends to move through the UFC from here.
Lima did not arrive at the decision lightly. He said tests at the Instituto de Performance do UFC showed that peso-pena fits his body better, and that the move is about health as much as performance. He began his UFC run with two straight wins at peso-pena before dropping to peso-galo in his third appearance, so the switch also sends him back to the division where he first found success.
The choice also carries a quiet twist. Lima said the loss to Payton Talbott in June of last year was not what drove the move, even though that defeat came after he was already fighting at peso-galo. He said he had delayed going back up because peso-galo looked like the faster route to the rankings, and he wanted to take that path while it was open.
That plan ran into reality later in the year. Lima was scheduled to face Daniel Marcos in November at peso-galo, but a back injury in camp pulled him out of the fight. He said that time away, along with personal problems he needed to sort through, gave him space to think about his career and the division he wanted to stay in.
For Lima, the decision now seems final. He said peso-pena is a healthier place for his body and the place where he can keep building his UFC career without the drain of repeated cuts to 61 kg. What comes next is straightforward enough: he walks into UFC Paris in a division he believes is built for him, and Charriere will be the first test of whether that belief shows up inside the cage.
