Alabama enters Saturday’s opener as a 28.5-point favorite over East Carolina, with the line and a 52.5-point total putting the spotlight on how quickly the Alabama Crimson Tide can look settled behind Keelon Russell in his first start. Kickoff from Bryant-Denny Stadium is set for Noon ET on ABC.
The number is large because the matchup points in two different directions at once. East Carolina returns just one offensive starter and has lost Katin Houser, its top two rushers, four of its five leading receivers and several important pieces up front, while Alabama is trying to answer its own questions after ranking 125th nationally in rushing at 104.1 yards per game and finishing last season with 48 rushing yards across its final three games.
That is why the opener is drawing so much attention now. Kalen DeBoer has already received a contract extension, but the new season still begins with a first-time starter at quarterback and an offensive line that has to absorb some turnover while the Tide try to do more on the ground than they did a year ago. Alabama’s defense gave up 297 yards and 19.2 points per game last season, which helps explain why the market is comfortable making the Crimson Tide such a heavy favorite.
East Carolina, meanwhile, is walking into a game that asks a rebuilt offense to function immediately against a defense with major talent advantages. The Pirates averaged nearly 33 points per game in 2025, but that production came before the personnel losses that now force a reset. Alabama can win with defense and depth, but the opener is also a test of how cleanly Russell and the new pieces around him handle the first real snap of the season.
The prediction range attached to the game points to the same expectation, with Alabama projected to win 38-7 or 41-7. That is the path the matchup invites, but the unanswered piece is whether the Tide can produce enough easy offense early to match the number and make Russell’s first start look routine from the opening series.
