Lille heads to Toulouse on Thursday with something rare and useful: momentum. Davide Ancelotti’s side has taken four points from its first two Ligue 1 games, starting with a 2-0 win at Angers and then drawing 2-2 with Paris SG after a strong opening against the reigning European champions. The trip to Toulouse, set for 20h45 in the 3rd round of Ligue 1, is the next test in a season that is already moving fast.
For Ancelotti, the timing matters because Lille’s next big date is already fixed. The club opens its Champions League campaign at home against Betis Séville next Tuesday, which makes the Toulouse match the last league checkpoint before Europe begins. That is why he put the focus squarely on this game, saying: “Le focus est total sur le match de demain, c’est le match le plus important pour nous pour le moment”.
Toulouse are also bracing for a side they see as difficult to contain. Jens Berthel Askou said it should be “a very spectacular match” between two dynamic teams, and described Lille as a team that can score in many ways, moving quickly, shifting well and leaning on experience and individual quality. That assessment fits what Lille have shown so far: a fast, aggressive start to the season and enough control to stay unbeaten through two matches.
But the same energy that makes Lille dangerous also comes with a cost. After the draw with Paris SG, Ancelotti admitted his team had faded late, saying that if a side wants to play a vertical game it must spend a lot of energy, and that Lille were tired and lower on the pitch in the second half because the opponent would not give the ball away. He also said the team needs to “garder un peu plus le ballon” to manage the ends of matches better. That is the balance he has to find in Toulouse: keep the pace that has made Lille attractive, without letting the game run out of them again.
The squad gives him options. Lille added Ayase Ueda and Maurits Kjaergaard in the last 24 hours of the transfer window, and Ancelotti said the club is covered in every position. He added that Lille are ready for “une saison très difficile, avec beaucoup de matches” and that he has choices to make, which is a good problem to have. The harder question is how quickly those choices turn into changes against Toulouse, with Thursday’s match carrying the kind of weight that comes from being the final rehearsal before Europe. For Lille, the point is not just to keep winning; it is to arrive at Betis Séville next week with legs, rhythm and a clearer answer to whether this squad can keep its intensity when the schedule tightens.
