Gloria Steinem, the journalist and feminist trailblazer who helped define second-wave feminism in the United States, has died at 92. Her official Instagram page said she passed away peacefully at her home in New York City on Wednesday, and the announcement followed on Thursday.

She later said she had already been the very small parent of a very big child — her mother — a reference to the mental health problems that shaped her childhood and, by her own account, helped push her toward giving women more of a voice.
