Police said two people were injured Wednesday morning in a shooting between two vehicles in Lee’s Summit, after gunfire erupted in the southbound lanes of Missouri Highway 291 near NE Chipman Road. The Lee’s Summit Police Department said officers were called to the 291-Chipman Road intersection about 10:50 a.m., where three suspects in dark clothes fired into a victim vehicle that had been stopped at the intersection.
The driver was shot four times and taken to a local hospital, Kelly Johnson said, while one other person was hurt by flying glass and was being treated. Johnson said three other nearby cars were struck by gunfire, a sign of how quickly the shooting spread beyond the two vehicles directly involved.
That matters because Highway 291 was closed after the reported shooting, turning a local investigation into a traffic problem on one of the area’s main routes. Police said they identified an original suspect vehicle as a dark gray F-150 using witness identification and FLOCK cameras, and investigators said they have camera images of the vehicle in the area but have not yet located it.
Police also said they do not believe the shooting was random. Johnson said investigators think it was an isolated event between two people who know one another, but they have not identified the relationship or what may have led to the shooting. That leaves the central question of motive unanswered even as officers narrow their search to a specific truck and the people tied to it.
For now, police are asking anyone who sees the vehicle to call 911 rather than approach it. Johnson said there is no current concern for safety tied to this incident, but the search for the truck and the people inside it remains the next step in the case.
