Luke Grimes is back as Kayce Dutton, and the Marshals season 2 trailer makes the biggest question from the last season plain: Tate is alive, and he is back with his father at East Camp. The trailer, which PEOPLE exclusively premiered, also sets the season 2 launch for Oct. 4 at 9 p.m. ET on CBS.
That answer matters because the first season ended with Tate’s fate left hanging after Tom Weaver took him to Texas under the guise of getting him away from the chaos at home. The new trailer starts with Kayce laying out the larger fight around the Dutton family, saying the legacy is not about land but about always having to fight, and adding that no matter where he lives, someone wants to kill for it. In the same stretch, Andrea calls him a chaos magnet, and Kayce fires back that he warned her to keep her distance.
The trailer also puts the family’s pull back at the center of the story. Kayce tells Tate, “It hurts my heart thinking of all you’ve been through,” and Tate answers that he is strong, like he was raised to be, “the Dutton way.” The conversation takes place during a visit to John Dutton’s grave, which gives the scene a harder edge than a simple reunion. It is not just that Tate returned. It is that he returned after a season built around fear, loss, and the sense that safety is never guaranteed.
That is exactly where the friction lands. Kayce wants a guarantee that Tate will escape unscathed from all the death and violence around him, but Thomas Rainwater cuts through that hope with a blunt answer: no one can give that to you, Kayce. The trailer does not soften that warning. One of Tom Weaver’s henchmen also directly threatens Tate’s future, which keeps the danger alive even after the boy is back with his father. It is a sharp reminder that the move to Texas did not solve the problem; it only shifted where the threat was coming from.
The season 1 finale left more than Tate unresolved. Cal and Belle were shot at by gunmen later revealed to be hired by Tom Wheeler, and the episode never confirmed their fates. Andrea also accepted a job in Washington, D.C., which leaves her own path open in a different direction. Logan Marshall-Green said he can confirm that he is alive, “but not necessarily unscathed,” and Arielle Kebbel said the new run begins by picking up that moment, with her head already deep into season 2. Ash Santos has described the coming season as one where viewers will start to see the cracks in Andrea as she weighs what she thought she wanted against what she may be leaving behind.
The trailer does not close the door on the violence around Kayce’s circle. It does something more useful: it shows that Tate has made it back, then immediately warns that survival is not the same as safety. When Marshals season 2 arrives on CBS, the real question will not be whether Kayce can bring his son home. It will be whether he can keep him there.
