Yoel Guevara-Crespo was arrested at Miami International Airport on Monday morning after telling an American Airlines employee he had a bomb while boarding Flight 1319 to Cuba. The 33-year-old was taken into custody after the remark disrupted the boarding process and triggered a security response.
The episode began during routine screening before the international flight, when an airline employee asked about lithium batteries and incendiary devices in Guevara-Crespo's luggage. He said he did not have either, but then said he had a bomb. When told he would not be allowed to fly and that a supervisor would be contacted, he said he was joking.
A K-9 sweep of his luggage found nothing suspicious, and the airline resumed normal operations after the search. Even so, Guevara-Crespo was arrested and taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. He now faces one count of making a false report about placing a bomb or explosive.
The arrest report places the statement in a setting that makes the decision harder to dismiss: routine security screening before boarding an international flight. That matters because the law does not turn on whether the speaker later says he was kidding; it turns on whether the bomb threat was made, and authorities treated it as real enough to stop boarding and search the luggage.
A judge found probable cause on Tuesday and set bond at $2,500. For Guevara-Crespo, that leaves the case where these airport incidents often end up, in court, with the joke defense already in the record and the charge still standing.
