United Airlines said on August 25, 2026, that it will add 10 new international cities and three new routes in what it called the largest international network expansion in company history. The carrier said the first of the new service will begin as early as March 2027.
For travelers watching United Airlines new nonstop routes, the timing matters because tickets are already on sale on united.com and in the United app. The new cities are Okinawa, Japan; Toulouse, France; Luxembourg City, Luxembourg; Marseille, France; Ibiza, Spain; Valencia, Spain; Terceira, Portugal; Ljubljana, Slovenia; Olbia, Italy; and Catania, Italy.
The airline said the additions go beyond a single region. United is also adding new flights from Los Angeles to Osaka, Japan; Washington, D.C. to Milan, Italy; and Denver to Paris, while planning to resume flights from San Francisco to Tel Aviv, Israel. It said eight of the 10 new cities are not served by any other U.S. airline, a claim that underlines how aggressively it is pressing into markets where competitors have little or no foothold.
United said the expansion builds on years of growth overseas. Since 2017, it has added 58 international destinations to its route map and now flies to more than 160 international destinations. The carrier also said it serves more destinations in Japan, Spain, Portugal, Italy and France than any other U.S. carrier, putting the latest move in line with a network that has been steadily spreading across Europe and Asia.
Still, the announcement leaves one important part of the map blurred. United gave only a starting window, not exact launch dates, for the new service, so customers can buy tickets now without yet knowing which route opens first. That is typical of a long lead-time network rollout, but it also means the headline expansion is real today while the actual flying remains partly ahead.
Scott Kirby said the airline’s post-pandemic international growth has helped set it apart and build a brand focused on customers. He also said United offers the most flights across the Atlantic and Pacific, calling Newark Liberty International Airport the best Atlantic gateway in the country and saying it is the most on-time airport in the New York City area so far this year. United debuted the Born to Explore A321XLR at Newark, and the aircraft’s lie-flat seats in United Polaris and Economy Plus cabin seating are part of the experience the company says will support the next phase of its long-haul push.
What matters next is not the size of the announcement, but the sequence. If United follows through on the full slate of cities beginning as early as March 2027, it will have used one disclosure to widen its map across Europe and Asia while deepening its lead in markets it already sees as core. The only thing left unclear is which of those routes will take off first.
