The return carries extra weight because Steve Rogers was given a definitive ending in Avengers: Endgame. In that film, he declined returning to the future and went back into the past to live a normal family life with Peggy Carter. That ending was meant to close the book on him, which is why Evans’s comeback has drawn so much attention. The first teaser showed Steve Rogers cradling the baby he shares with Peggy Carter, the second showed him handling Thor's hammer with ease, and the newest trailer shows him holding Loki's TVA card.

Evans has also said before that the Russos love beating up Steve Rogers, describing their favorite thing as putting him through punishment and calling that the test of a hero. Avengers: Doomsday arrives this December 18, and Avengers: Secret Wars is out next year. Evans’s explanation suggests the return is not just about revisiting Steve Rogers, but about pushing him into a situation that still has something new to say.
