The Washington Nationals are calling up Yohandy Morales in September, setting up what would be his MLB debut if he gets into tomorrow’s game against the Atlanta Braves. The 24-year-old infielder is expected to be activated as rosters expand to 28.
For Morales, it is the first real major-league opening after a strong year at Triple-A Rochester. In 104 games, he hit.286/.363/.519 with 25 home runs, 76 RBI, 19 doubles and 82 runs scored, production that put him in position for a late-season look.
The move also fits the moment for Washington. The Nationals are eight games out of the last NL Wild Card spot, so September is less about a push in the standings than about finding out what they have. Morales, drafted in the second round in 2023 out of the University of Miami (FL), spent last season moving from Double-A Harrisburg to Rochester and has stayed there this year while playing mostly first base and also seeing time at third base.
That path makes the promotion notable, but not automatic. Morales remained outside the Nationals’ top 30 prospects on MLB Pipeline’s rankings even after putting up those numbers, a reminder that production and projection do not always line up neatly. Washington has used a platoon at first base since trading Luis García Jr. to the New York Yankees, and Brady House has third base covered for now, which gives Morales a chance to be evaluated without a clear long-term label attached to him.
The next step is simple enough: he is set to be activated for the game against the Atlanta Braves. Whether he gets into the lineup, and where the Nationals decide to use him once he is there, will show how quickly the club is willing to test a bat that has earned a first look but still has to translate from Triple-A to MLB.
