Christopher Judge says he did read for the lead in Prime Video's God of War TV show, but the role is not one he wants to carry at 62. He said the reading itself made clear to him that the job would demand a kind of lead-actor life he no longer wants, and that he stepped away from the idea after finding it difficult to memorize his lines.
That turns Judge into the latest familiar face to comment on a part that has already changed hands. Dave Bautista now has the role after Ryan Hurst was attached first and then recast after a severe injury on set. Judge said he believed Hurst was the right pick, describing him as a gamer, a new father and someone who had played all the games, while adding that Bautista should be excellent in the part.
The comments matter because Judge is not speaking as an outside observer. He already knows Kratos from God of War Ragnarök, where he became the second actor to provide both the voice and motion capture for the character in 2022. He also knows what it means to anchor a long-running franchise: he was one of the leads of Stargate from age 33 to 44, playing Teal'c across about 211 episodes from 1997 to 2007.
That history explains why he was blunt about his own limits. Judge said the reading was hard and that his mind and body were starting to tell him he did not want to do this. He said he has no desire, at 62, to return to the kind of lead role that would require him to live that way again.
His support for Bautista came with one caution. Bautista had already lost about 100 pounds, and Judge said he hoped putting the weight back on for Kratos would not create health issues. The franchise now has its live-action lead, and the off-camera conversation has shifted from who might play Kratos to how the role will be handled safely.
God of War still has no release date, and the cast around Bautista is already in place, with Ed Skrein as Baldur, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Max Parker as Heimdall, Sonya Walger as Freya and Alastair Duncan as Mimir. For Judge, the answer was settled before the camera ever rolled: he tried the part, then decided it was not the life he wanted next.
