Humana Medicare Advantage Cuts 2027 to Hit About 600,000 Members

Humana is cutting Medicare Advantage plans in 2027, a move the company says will affect about 600,000 members. The exits are part of a broader push to focus on higher-performing coverage and improve profitability, even as some people may be moved into other Humana offerings.

The timing matters now because federal rules require non-renewal notices for coverage ending December 31 to be dated October 2, and Medicare's annual enrollment period runs from October 15 through December 7. For members, that means the clock is already moving on choices that could reshape next year's coverage.

Humana told investors in July that its targeted 2027 exits would reach that scale. The company has not identified which Medicare Advantage plans will leave the market, but the number alone shows this is not a routine trimming of a few weak products. It is a wide cut that touches a large share of enrollees at once.

The practical consequence is more complicated than a simple plan switch. When a Medicare Advantage plan leaves Medicare or stops serving a person's area, federal law can give that member a guaranteed-issue Medigap right if they move to Original Medicare. That protection means the insurer cannot reject the application, impose a waiting period for pre-existing conditions or charge more because of health.

That matters because the plan going away may have been the one a member liked best. Doctors, benefits and monthly premium can all be reasons someone stays put, and those preferences do not stop a non-renewal notice from arriving. Humana's strategy may make business sense on paper, but the people affected still have to replace coverage on a deadline.

Standardized Medigap choices include Plans A, B, C, D, F and G, subject to eligibility, though people new to Medicare in 2020 or later generally cannot buy Plans C or F. Humana also expects to retain some affected members by moving them into other Humana offerings, which means not every non-renewal will send a person outside the company.

The next step is straightforward and urgent: affected members will need to compare Original Medicare with possible Medigap coverage against other Medicare Advantage options before December 7. The unanswered question is how many will end up keeping Humana coverage and how many will be forced into a broader search for a replacement plan.
