Cole Knuble made his NHL debut for the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday night, stepping into the lineup after a call-up from Lehigh Valley. The 22-year-old got the moment with his parents in the building, a first night in the league that carried a family link as well as a roster need.

He was one of three players brought up from the American Hockey League club to help cover for injured forwards Owen Tippett, Tyson Foerster and Travis Konecny against Colorado. For Knuble, the debut arrived after he came close to making the team out of training camp and was sent down before getting the call back.

“Obviously I have been a fan of this team my whole life, so I think it's extra special,” Knuble said. That was never just talk. His father, Mike Knuble, played 362 games, counting playoffs, for Philadelphia across 2005-09 and again in 2013, which made the jersey on his back something larger than a stop on the schedule.

He had also said he came to camp trying to make the team, and that he handled the move to Lehigh Valley by treating every game as a chance to show what he could do. He said the staff there were great, the players welcoming, and that getting to play in every situation made the assignment hard to complain about.

The part that is left hanging is what comes next. Knuble’s debut gives the Flyers a young, locally connected forward at a time when they need bodies, but his role beyond Monday night was not set out. For now, the night itself is the news: a son of a former Flyer reached the NHL with his parents watching, and he did it for the same team his family spent years following.
