Florida officials said 163 missing children were recovered in Operation Statewide Shield, a five-day sweep they described as the first statewide child recovery effort in Florida history and the largest of its kind.
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced the recovery and said the children were ages 2 months to 17 years old. The effort was led by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement with Special Counsel for Human Trafficking Rita Peters, and it stretched across Pensacola, Tallahassee, Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa, Fort Myers and Miami.
The numbers show how far the case reached. Officials said 46 children were recovered in Tampa Bay, 41 in Miami, 32 in Jacksonville, 21 in Orlando, 12 in Fort Myers, 8 in Pensacola and 3 in Tallahassee. They also said the task force recovered children across six U.S. states, Puerto Rico and 12 foreign countries, including Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Dominica, Finland, Ghana, Guatemala, Italy, Jamaica, Mexico, Spain and Taiwan.
Those children were not all treated the same once they were found. Officers transported recovered children to specialized hubs for social services, medical care and child welfare support, a sign that the operation was not only about location but also about immediate needs. Officials said many of the rescued children were victims of human trafficking, but they did not say how many fell into that category.
The arrests point to how the operation is still unfolding. Officials said three people were taken into custody, including Michael Prescott, who was arrested Aug. 21 by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and charged with three counts of lewd and lascivious acts with a minor, one count of felony battery and one count of aggravated assault. He also had an active warrant for interference with child custody. Robert Ferral Allison was arrested Aug. 20 by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and charged with lewd and lascivious battery on a victim 12 to 16 years old. Jayden Allen Harwood was reportedly arrested on charges of interference in a child custody case and resisting officers without violence.
The operation was modeled on earlier federal efforts, including Operations Dragon Eye and Home for the Holidays, but Florida officials cast this one as a different scale of response. They said more arrests are expected, which leaves the biggest question not whether the sweep found children — it did — but how many of the 163 were caught in trafficking networks and how far the investigation will go next.
