Carolina is in Ireland this week with its football season opener now looming, and the trip has already moved beyond practice fields. The Tar Heels are preparing to face Texas Christian University, while leaders, student-athletes, fans and alumni take part in a full slate of events in Dublin.
That is why the UNC football roster search has picked up now: the opener arrives today, with kickoff set for noon ET and 5 p.m. in Dublin. The week has mixed sport with the rest of the university’s presence abroad, including work and activities tied to research, education, public service, business, innovation and the arts.
Lee H. Roberts hosted a game day brunch at Trinity College Dublin with Magnus Egerstedt, Steve Newmark and other leaders, a sign that this trip is being treated as more than a stop on the schedule. It also places the football program inside a broader university push that reaches well past the field, and the university says the week in Dublin is meant to be “Much More Than a Game.”
The football group has also used the trip to meet people far from a typical preseason setting. On Aug. 28, the Tar Heels visited Ballyboden St. Enda’s GAA Club for a clinic, teaching local children American football skills while learning about traditional Irish sports. That exchange fits the point of the trip: the season opener may be the headline, but the week has been built to make Carolina visible in Dublin for more than one result on one day.
Even the mascot plan ran into travel reality. The live Rameses mascot could not make the international trip, so Seamus stepped in as an Irish substitute, a small but telling reminder that the Tar Heels are doing this opener far from home and adapting as they go.
The most striking result so far came from the women’s soccer team, which blanked Shelbourne FC 3-0 in an exhibition Friday night. Scottie Antonucci, Summer Denigan and Bella Devey scored the goals, and the match at Tolka Park drew the venue’s largest women’s crowd ever. Tolka Park opened in 1924, which makes the turnout notable not because of the scoreline alone, but because a women’s exhibition there produced a record crowd in a ground with a long history.
For Carolina, the trip now turns to the part that will be measured most plainly: the game against TCU. Everything else in Dublin has built toward that kickoff, and the football program has already used the week to show that the UNC football roster is arriving with a university-sized spotlight behind it.
