Joe Buck apologized to Troy Aikman and the entire production team after a reported blowup that began with a Week 5 confrontation at the Bills-Rams game at SoFi Stadium and spilled into Monday night in Santa Clara. The message was simple: move on and get through the season.
That matters now because Buck and Aikman have worked together for 25 years, and the awkward exchange landed while they are still on the air together. A source told Dylan Byers that Buck finally snapped during the Week 5 incident, asking, “Dude, are we really going to do this?” Aikman’s response, according to the report, was, “You fucked me over!” Another source said the two “exchanged some very direct and honest feelings.”
The money behind the split helps explain why the partnership turned so sour. In May, Buck cut a deal on his extension with the understanding that he may have a new partner in 2027, while one of Aikman’s agents pegged his value at $30 million per year, well above his current rate of $18 million. Byers reported that Aikman felt like a lot of people had fucked him over, and that he had grown increasingly cold, difficult and short in the weeks before the clash.
Buck then tried to reset the room on the most recent Monday night in Santa Clara, telling Aikman and the production team, “We’re all adults, we’ve all got jobs to do, let’s move forward, let’s have a great year.” Aikman reportedly said nothing after that. The silence was as telling as the apology, because it left the sense that one half of the booth was ready to keep broadcasting while the other was not ready to forgive.
For now, Buck and Aikman are expected to keep working together for the rest of the season, including ’s first Super Bowl, and possibly through the final game of the 2026 season. But the report leaves little doubt that the partnership is moving toward its end, even if the exact handoff to CBS or Prime Video has not been settled.
