Tua Tagovailoa is expected to start for the Atlanta Falcons against the Miami Dolphins on Friday night at Hard Rock Stadium, sending Miami’s former quarterback back to South Florida for the team’s final preseason game. It is the last chance for the Dolphins and Falcons to sort out the edges of their rosters, and it comes with an unusual layer: Tagovailoa, once Miami’s 2020 first-round pick, returns after being released by the Dolphins this offseason and joining Atlanta.
For Miami, the numbers behind his departure are impossible to separate from the decision. Tagovailoa played six seasons for the Dolphins, threw for 18,166 yards, 120 touchdowns and 59 interceptions, and still left as the franchise’s all-time leader in passer rating and completion percentage.
