Jess Fishlock will play her final regular-season match and final home game for Seattle Reign FC on Sunday, when the club hosts Orlando at 2 p.m. PT on Decision Day. For Seattle, the game at Lumen Field is more than a farewell. A win guarantees a playoff spot. A draw or a loss sends the Reign into the standings watch, waiting on other results.

The timing gives the match its charge. Fishlock is 39 and still the last of the three Reign originals from the club’s inaugural season who stayed more than a decade, a span that also saw Megan Rapinoe retire after the 2023 season and Lauren Barnes step away after 2025. Before the first whistle, Seattle will honor Fishlock as the 2026 winner of the Lu Barnes Award, a fitting nod for a player who helped keep the Reign in the playoff hunt with a brace against the Boston Legacy in September.

Her legacy with Seattle has always carried two versions at once: the one opponents feared and the one teammates leaned on. Ainsley McCammon said older players were scared and intimidated before they met her. Phoebe McClernon has not forgotten getting diced in the 18-yard box when she was with Orlando in 2021, saying she was mortified and would rather get beaten by Fishlock than anyone else. Sofia Huerta said she was intimidated by how intense Fishlock was, then added that intensity was exactly what made her so good and the main reason Seattle was so hard to play against.

That split image shows up off the field, too. Fishlock can look every bit the ruthless competitor when the game starts, but teammates also describe her as a sweet mentor and the life of the party. At this year’s team Halloween party, she turned up dressed as a minion, wearing a youth-sized costume she could not even close at the back. It is a small detail, but it fits the bigger one: the player Seattle feared, followed and built around is leaving with one last result still hanging over her farewell. If the Reign win, the story ends cleanly with a playoff berth. If they do not, Sunday becomes the start of another round of waiting.
