Westview High School in Omaha was placed in lockdown Friday afternoon after Douglas County authorities said they responded to reports of an armed student on campus. Deputies were searching the school while students and staff remained under lockdown procedures.
Units reached the school just after 2 p.m., and Omaha Public Schools said at 2:34 p.m. that Westview High was officially in lockdown and following its Standard Response Protocol. First Alert 6 crews saw officers posted around the building and a helicopter overhead as the response unfolded at 156th and Ida.
The case carried an edge that set it apart from a routine security call. Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said the student had not made threats of violence, even as it said the report involved a firearm in a bag and multiple deputies were on scene. That left authorities dealing with a weapon report on a school campus without any known threat statement to anchor the response.
The sheriff’s office said it had received reports of an armed party at Westview High School and that it was not currently aware of any threats to commit violence made by the individual. What it did not say was just as important: whether the student was found, whether the firearm was recovered, and whether the lockdown had been lifted by the end of the afternoon. Those unanswered questions are what will determine how long the school remains on edge after Friday’s response.
