University of Central Arkansas opens its season Thursday night against Tennessee-Martin, a ranked FCS opponent that will host the game at 6:30 p.m. Central at Hardy M. Graham Stadium in Martin, Tenn. For UCA, it is the first chance to reset after a 3-9 season that ended with five straight losses.
That search makes sense because the matchup lands at the front of the college football calendar and gives the Bears an immediate answer about where they stand. Tennessee-Martin enters No. 22 in the preseason FCS coaches poll and No. 1 in the Ohio Valley preseason poll after finishing 6-6 last season, while Central Arkansas is trying to move past a year that matched its longest single-season losing streak since going to Division I.
The quarterback question is settled for now. Donovyn Omolo, a transfer from Central Missouri, won the starting job in fall camp over Walker White and Tyler Dudden and will make his UCA debut Thursday night. Nathan Brown called that decision a reward for a player who earned it, saying Omolo has a feel for the position and the kind of leadership that can matter once the season settles in. That is the part of the opener that carries the most weight for Central Arkansas: not just whether the Bears can compete, but whether a new starter can make a ranked road game look manageable from the first snap.
Brown also knows the backdrop is different from recent seasons. Central Arkansas has not opened with a money game or a Power Four opponent in four years, and this one comes against a Tennessee-Martin team that, like UCA, rebuilt with transfers after last season. The Skyhawks brought in 53 transfers; UCA added 42. The numbers matter because both teams are asking new pieces to come together quickly, but only one of them is carrying the burden of a five-game finish that kept hanging around through the offseason.
Even so, the Bears are not walking into something unfamiliar in the series itself. UCA leads the all-time matchup 9-5, and the teams have not met since 2014, when the Bears won 26-24 in Conway. That history does not change what Thursday night means now. It just reminds UCA that this is not a brand-new opponent, only a fresh test at the exact moment the Bears need to know whether last season is finally behind them.
The first answer arrives at kickoff. By the time the night is over, UCA will know whether Omolo can steady an offense that is still sorting out its shape and whether a ranked Tennessee-Martin team can justify its preseason billing against a visitor trying to start over.
