Perez Hilton suffered multiple broken bones after falling several times during the mental health crisis that sent him to the hospital earlier this month. His brother-in-law, Tom, said the injuries went beyond cuts and included other damage that the family has since tied back to earlier sepsis-related issues.
The update lands now because Hilton, whose real name is Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr., was taken to a Miami-area hospital on August 4 after authorities responded to reports that he appeared to harm himself during a disturbing TikTok livestream. An incident report cited by NBC 6 South Florida said fire rescue personnel treated him at the scene for multiple lacerations and an overdose before he was transported for further care, and his family later said his condition was serious but stable after significant blood loss.
Tom said the family is now shifting its attention away from the physical trauma and toward Hilton’s mental health. He said there were broken bones and other injuries discovered after the falls on the night of the incident, and that the focus has moved to what comes next for his recovery. That recovery already includes a home situation changed by the crisis: Hilton voluntarily granted his mother, Teresita Lavandeira, temporary legal custody of Mario, 13, Mia, 11, and Mayte, 8.
There is still no clear answer for what set off the breakdown. Tom said the family has not discovered the actual healing process, or what caused the mental break, despite online speculation that it might have been sepsis psychosis. He said the family found some other things connected to his sepsis, but the cause of the crisis itself remains unknown.
Psychiatrists reportedly continued checking on Hilton throughout his hospitalization to monitor his condition and ensure his safety, which makes the unanswered question more urgent, not less. The physical injuries are now known to be severe, but the more important gap is whether doctors will be able to identify what triggered the collapse before the next crisis has a chance to begin.
