Heavy rain on Aug. 24 triggered landslides, flooded crossings and broken road sections across mountain communes in Thanh Hóa, cutting traffic on Quốc lộ 217 and Quốc lộ 16 and forcing evacuations in some places. In Quan Sơn, 4 households were moved to safety after earth slid into their living area, while several other crossings were left under fast-rising water.
The scale of the damage was measured in scattered but sharp blows to access routes. At Km151+250 in Tân Thành, about 40m3 of earth and rock came down from the uphill slope and blocked traffic. At Km143+500 in Quan Sơn, another slide buried a drainage ditch under roughly 180m3 of debris. Two more points in Trung Thượng added about 35m3, and two sections in Sơn Lư were hit by about 40m3 more, turning what should have been a routine mountain road into a chain of stoppages. Several culverts and overflow points across the commune were also flooded, leaving traffic split in two.
The impact spread quickly in Quang Chiểu. Around 7 a.m. on Aug. 24, a mass of soil, rock and trees fell onto Quốc lộ 16 near Bơn. Earlier that morning, the overflow crossing from Pọong to Suối Tút was swept away by floodwater, and the bridge crossing on the Pọong - Con Dao road in Pọong broke, splitting the two sides apart by about 12m. That left 9 households, or 42 people, temporarily isolated, while erosion on the Pọong - Co Cài road cut off 47 households with 223 people. Other flooded culverts isolated 81 households in Cúm cũ and 75 households in Pù Đứa.
Lương Văn Triền said the overflow crossing from Pọong to Suối Tút serves the daily travel needs of more than 80 households in Suối Tút heading to the center, which is why its loss hit so hard even though the route is not the only way in and out. That is the friction in this storm damage: the Pọong - Con Dao road was broken and several areas were cut off, yet people were still being directed along other routes because the road is not an exclusive lifeline. In Suối Tút cũ, Quang Chiểu also moved 9 households with 36 people to safety, while roadside damage and flooding continued at other points in the commune.
Local forces are now keeping watch at flooded overflow points and landslide sites, clearing blockages so traffic can move again where possible. The immediate question is not whether crews are responding — they are — but how long the mountain roads will stay patchworked and where the next collapse could come when water keeps pressing on already damaged slopes.
