A police chase in Gower ended Saturday afternoon when the suspect’s car exploded behind a restaurant, sending flying metal into patrol vehicles and forcing officers to clear nearby homes. Clinton County sheriff’s office identified the suspect as Christopher Williams, 54, of Gower.
The chain of events began around 11:37 a.m., when Clinton County dispatchers got a call about a man making threats about suicide by cop. Deputies were warned he had a gun, homemade bombs and wanted police to shoot him, then found Williams outside a home near Gower at 12:19 p.m. He was holding a black backpack when deputies saw him.
Williams got into a car and drove away after refusing to stop. During the chase, the driver turned and drove straight toward deputies’ cars, then held what looked like a bomb out of the window as he passed them. At 12:29 p.m., the pursuit went into the driveway of a restaurant in Gower and ended in an open field behind the business.
The car exploded two minutes later, at 12:31 p.m. Flying metal from the blast hit and damaged some of the police cars, but no officers were injured. That is the part of the case that matters most right now: the blast was severe enough to damage patrol vehicles and trigger evacuations, yet it left law enforcement with a destroyed car and no immediate answer for what set it off.
That question is still open. Authorities have not said what caused the explosion, only that the Kansas City Bomb Squad was at the scene checking the destroyed car for other active explosives.
